Disney
Turning Back On Their Own Legacy?
In a move that is
coming as no surprise to many industry insiders, and considered to
be one of the last steps in abandoning traditional animation
altogether, Disney is expected to officially close its Florida
Feature Animation studio in Orlando today. Some animators at the
Orlando studio are expected to be offered jobs in Burbank but most
animators will be left jobless by the move.
Since 1928, Walt Disney Studios have been the industry leader in
creating fanciful, beautiful animated films. From Steamboat Willie
to Snow White and on through the ages, Disney animators have shown
us fantasy, magic, joy and tears brought to life from nothing but a
pencil and a piece of paper. Long the labor of love of Walt Disney
himself, Disney animation has suffered through debilitating strikes,
the loss of Walt and the much-touted “death of animation” through
the 1980s. Built upon the “Dare, Dream, Do” ethic of Walt Disney,
the animation unit has always fought their way back to the top.
The question remains now, is Disney returning to its roots and
focusing on telling a good story or will they completely abandon
traditional animation and follow the trend of 3D but still wallow in
films containing half-concepts rather than full-bodied stories?
Either way, without the talent and foresight of some of the best
animators in the business, one has to wonder how Disney will move
forward. Many fans wonder if feature animation, with a leader with
Walt’s vision, could have flourished and moved traditional animation
into the future. We may never know.
