<<Pin
Trading Tale with Mickey'sGirl>>
Pin Trading is something we got into as a way to encourage our sons, who are
autistic, to interact with people at Walt Disney World. Each of the four of us
started with an appropriate lanyard; Pirates for my oldest son, Mickey for my
youngest son, Goofy for my husband and Pie-eyed Mickey for me. We enjoy
collecting pins – and making purchases at various shops (our favourite being the
Frontierland Trading Post). We initially found the process to be quite
overwhelming … there was so much choice and so many beautiful pins! So, my
husband and I decided to choose a theme and concentrate on that. His first
lanyard was all Goofy. My first lanyard was solo Mickeys (no other characters on
the pin with him), they boys stuck to buying (or having us buy) pins that they
liked “just because”.
During our trip we also bought some mystery pins for trading, because our goal
here was to have the boys interact with people. Yes, sometimes trading brings on
tears of remorse … such as the time when my oldest son traded his newly acquired
Test Track pin with Mexican Donald’s handler, and regretted his decision by the
time we were taking the Gran Fiesta Tour along the Rio del Tiempo. Thankfully
the same handler was still out front when we got back outside, and she happily
traded with us again. Sometimes trading builds relationships. Back in 2006, I
spied a great little Mickey dressed as Peter Pan pin on a Cast Member named
Constantina. Unfortunately, at that time I had lost my only trading pin. I told
her I would be back to trade with her, and we spent the next few days seeking
her out in Fantasyland. Eventually we met up, and she was able to trade the pin
with me! Fast forward a year, and one day while en route to Buzz, we encountered
Constantina near the Carousel and she RECOGNIZED US from the Crazy Mickey as
Peter Pan Pin Search of 2006. It was so much fun to talk again!
Years on, we pre-purchase trading pins in lots from an online seller. We take
them to the World and continue our trading. We also buy the Limited Edition pins
that are available to Disney Vacation Club members or Annual Passholders. We
have become much more selective in our trading, and last year started working on
“Collections”. This is where a group of pins which had been sold as a set has
been broken up and traded individually. It started when our youngest traded for
a Mickey pin that he liked, and then later traded for another Mickey pin that he
liked, and we found that they were remarkably similar. The awesome lady at the
Frontierland Trading Post explained that they were part of a set, and gave us a
colour printout of all the pins in that set that we could set out to find. By
the end of our 17 days, we had collected the entire set of pins. It was so
exciting to seek them out and eventually make the trade! When it was complete,
our son was so proud!
We have been pin collectors for over 8 years now, and now keep our favourite
pins in a book, and others are framed in my bedroom, and still others (the Grape
Soda pin my husband bought me last year) are regularly worn on my lapel. It is a
fantastic was to meet people and have fun with your family.
