<<Surviving Walt Disney World Summer with Strmchsr>>

We all know that Florida can be unbearable Mid-May through September with the heat and the humidity. So, here's a few things you need to know if you're traveling to Walt Disney World in the summer:

First off, Florida is notorious for sea breeze thunderstorms. These occur most every afternoon from mid-June through mid-September. They are brief (less than an hour) but often very strong. Use this to your advantage - take a break. Lightning kills more people each year than tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods combined and these storms tend to have a lot of lightning, heavy rain, and high winds. Don't risk walking around in it. Find somewhere to chill out until it's passed then return to having fun.

As for the heat...take the basic precaution of wearing light colored, loose fitting clothing. Also, use a high rating sunscreen. Nothing will ruin your Walt Disney World trip faster than a bad sunburn and during the summer you can burn in 10 minutes of exposure. You need a minimum of SPF 50 for prolonged exposure to the Florida summer sun. Apply it regularly (not just once in the morning). For children, especially infants, this is even more the case. Be sure to use the sweat/water proof version. I usually get the sport versions as they resist sweat well. Use a hat to cover your head/face as those are usually areas difficult to cover with sunscreen.

The biggest thing people complain about with Florida summers is the humidity...and for good reason. Let me urge you to take lots of breaks, drink lots of water, and take it slow. I know the temptations of pushing hard while on vacation. This isn't just a bad idea during a Walt Disney World summer...it can literally kill you. {Warning! Science Content Ahead!} Our bodies cool themselves by sweating. When we get hot we produce moisture on our skin (sweat). When that sweat evaporates it releases heat, thus allowing our bodies to regulate our temperature. The problem in Florida is that during the summer the dew point (the true measure of humidity. Relative humidity is worthless) gets to saturation point often, which means the air can't absorb any more water. This is a big problem for your body because it means the sweat you're producing can't evaporate, which means your body has no way to cool itself. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can occur very quickly at this point. Children and infants are especially susceptible to this. It's not a matter of just "sucking it up." Usually when you hear of professional athletes dying during summer heat it's because of this same reason. You need to take breaks to cool off since your body's natural cooling mechanism will no longer work. This can happen any time during the summer but is most common in July and August. During those months go early in the morning, take a break from about noon or 1 until about 5 pm. Take a nap, go swimming, shop, whatever. Then go back and enjoy the evening in the park. Following that pattern will keep you healthy and give you the most enjoyment out of your summer vacation at Walt Disney World.
