It's Summertime, Summertime, Sum-Sum-Summertime!

Happy June everyone! Bet you didn’t know I could sing so well. That was the Sha-na-na version, by the way. For those of you wondering; Gary is still submerged in the Swamp. Although at last report, bubbles were seen on the surface. In the meantime, once again you’ll have to settle for me. In last month's Insider we reviewed the basics heat-related illnesses and how to treat them. In this month's installment we'll look at strategies you can use to beat the heat this summer on your vacation at Disney World.

Got Water? The most important way to prevent heat-related problems is to increase your fluid intake when you're out under the hot sun. For otherwise healthy people, that means 2-4 glasses of cool water every hour. (For those with chronic health conditions, it is always best to consult your doctor about how much you should drink.) You don't have to break the bank to buy beverages at Disney World. Water is absolutely the best liquid to drink to avoid dehydration, and many people bring water bottles to the parks and just keep refilling them at drinking fountains or concessions all day. Try to avoid drinks that contain alcohol or caffeine as they can actually dehydrate your body.

Pace Yourself- If you are unaccustomed to being active in a hot environment, start slowly and pick up the pace gradually (easier said than done at the most Magical Place on Earth!) If exertion is causing your heart to pound and your head to ache, then slow down.

Do a Balancing Act- Alternate periods of outdoor activity with indoor (as in air-conditioned) activity. While it may be tempting to go right from waiting in line at the Indy Speedway to a Mickey Meet and Greet in Toontown, it would probably be a better idea to take in the air-conditioned line at Space Mountain first.

Take a Breather- The strategy many Disney World visitors use is to visit the theme parks early and late in the day, with a trip back to the hotel room (or better yet, the hotel pool or water parks) in between. This is a very effective way to cool off and also avoid the worst of the afternoon
heat and crowds at the parks.

Catch a Breeze- Or create one, if necessary. Standing in line with bunch of folks briskly fanning themselves with their park brochures may look funny, but even that small breeze is effective in helping to evaporate sweat on your skin and keep it cool. Even better, bring along a few inexpensive collapsing fans (or buy them at the China pavilion at EPCOT) and do it right! In recent years, the use of mini-fans/spritzers have become an unofficial WDW obsession. You can purchase them at the theme parks, but you can also buy them at many discount stores.

Made in the Shade- Disney World is pretty good about offering shaded queues for their attractions, but it doesn't hurt to keep an eye out for every opportunity to make use of shade. Not only will it keep you cooler, but it will also keep you from getting sunburned (of course, you should use plenty of sun block when out in the sun, but that's another story!) You can also carry around a small portable umbrella to make your own shade. True, some people may look at you funny (just before they start sidling closer to your man-made shade), but this can be very effective.

Chill Out- There are various other things you can do to keep cool. Splash your face with water every time you use the restroom. Make good use of Splash Mountain (need I say more?) My favorite way to keep cool is by taking a few ice cubes, rolling them up in a bandanna and tying it around my neck. As the ice melts and wets the fabric, it cools the pulse points in neck, which makes the rest of my body feel cooler. Plus you can use it over and over again all day. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in light colors, which will reflect sunlight and feel cooler (dark colors absorb sunlight, making you feel hotter.) Whatever methods you use to keep cool at Disney World, use them consistently.

One additional note-- Children younger than four years of age and adults older than 65 need to be monitored even more closely in hot environments and should avoid being outside in the hottest part of the day whenever possible. Their! bodies cannot adapt and control their internal temperatures as well as other age groups can. So stay safe, keep cool and have fun this summer at Disney World!

As mentioned above, the Disney Water Parks are a fantastic way to beat the Florida heat. Eva recently returned from her Disney vacation and has a lot to offer on that subject.

It's the age-old question: which water park should I visit on my Walt Disney World vacation? With the closing of River Country (which went down for refurbishment earlier this year without much advance warning) that leaves only two choices: Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. I recently had the opportunity to spend a full day at both with the intentions of comparing and contrasting. To be honest, if I had only one day to visit one park it would be a tough choice. Here is my assessment of both:

TYPHOON LAGOON
Upon arriving we were thrilled by the theming and beauty of this park. Since the park is themed after a shipwreck in a tropical paradise, the flora of the park is stunning. There are gorgeous flowers and plenty of palm trees, adding to the ambience of a tropical paradise. There was plenty of shade to be found and we staked out two chairs in front of the wave pool (our favorite attraction) and got settled for the day. We skipped the locker rental (we didn't bring much in our knapsack - a credit card, $10 in small bills and sunscreen) and left to have some fun.

The centerpiece of TL is the enormous wave pool. We enjoyed both the intense wave period (with 6' swells and the gentle bobbing wave period. This is definitely where we spend the most amount of time that day. Children absolutely loved the waves and I enjoyed hearing the screams of delight as the whistle sounded before "the big waves" came.

TL has a few slides, the most daring one being Humunga Kowabunga. We skipped these slides since they don't really thrill us (we did the same with Summit Plummit at BB) and they actually hurt my back. These slides are not for the faint of heart - heed all warnings posted at the bottom of each slide and don't ride them if you are uncomfortable with heights, enclosed spaces or "wedgies." We did observe brave riders for a while, which to me are more fun than actually riding. I think we heard "wedgie" in four different languages that day!

The family area at TL is wonderful with plenty of activities and room for the younger members of your party. The smaller children actually seemed to be more enamored by the enormous amounts of sand that was available for castle-building and toys were available for purchase towards the front of the park.

We also observed the shark reef but did not go in - instead we watched divers and walked through the underground passage-way. We passed because the water is EXTREMELY cold - it is kept between 65 and 69 degrees and you only wear your bathing suit and a life vest. It was barely 80 degrees the day we visited TL so we took a pass. Those swimming looked like they were having great fun and the fish are beautiful. We got to observe a feeding by one of the handlers and were able to see almost every variety of fish in the tank.

Our assessment of TL: absolutely lovely and a wonderful way to spend a peaceful water park day. The lazy river was delightful, the slides, though there weren't very many of them, were great fun, and the wave pool unrivaled by any other water park we had been to. We feel in love with the place and will return again.

BLIZZARD BEACH
Blizzard Beach has a much different feel from Typhoon Lagoon, though it is just as well themed. The story is that a freak snowstorm hit Central Florida and a developer quickly jumped on the chance of opening a ski resort. Alas, the warm weather quickly returned and all of the melting snow formed water slides and a wave pool. A cute Alpine Village setting greets you as you walk through the front gates and into the park. Each attraction has "snow" piled high on rocks and you really feel as though you are in an Alpine village.

Because we arrived so early we were able to stake out good spots, just as we had at TL. Comfortable lounge chairs are coveted and are first-come, first-served. The interesting thing about BB is that there are so many little "islands" of chairs hidden amongst the park, that almost everyone is guaranteed a spot.

To be honest, initially I was less impressed with BB than I was with TL during the morning part of our visit. At first it seemed like there were so many "thrill-slides" that I thought there would be much less to do for the average visitor than TL. That was until I found the Snow Stormers and the Toboggan Racers - two mat slides located on Mt. Gushmore. These slides were great fun and were not so uncomfortable or scary that anyone couldn't participate. We also enjoyed the Downhill Double Dipper - a racing speed slide where visitors shoot down slides on inner tubes at speeds up to 25 MPH.

The lazy river, or Cross Country Creek, was quite delightful and is a great way to relax. The journey is quite long - almost a mile around the park - and is quite scenic and has a few surprises! The children's area, though not as impressive as TL, was definitely adequate for the little tots and the nearby pre-teen area seemed to be a hit.

Our assessment of BB: A (nearly) perfect park with great slides and a lot of fun. A perfect water park would exist if one could meld BB's slides with TL's wave pool.

So, which one to choose? Give the choice, my family would probably go with TL -but only by a slight margin. By the end of our day at BB we had decided that we would probably never go to one park without going to the other during the same vacation. Both parks have so much to offer and a great time will be had at both.

Some tips for both parks:
ARRIVE EARLY. Both days we arrived more than a half-hour before opening and there were already a couple of hundred people waiting at the gates. Arriving early afforded us a prime spot on some comfy lounge chairs in front of the wave pools and we were able to stake out a location under a nice umbrella.

This was especially important at Blizzard Beach where there is little shade.

BRING PLENTY OF SUNSCREEN. I made the mistake of ignoring this ritual since I have never suffered from sunburn in my life. I left Typhoon Lagoon with burnt shoulders and learned my lesson. Even for those with a darker complexion it is so important to frequently apply a good quality sunscreen. We use Banana Boat SPF 30 - a higher SPF isn't really necessary since you have to re-apply after towel drying and swimming and we did that frequently.

WEAR WATERSHOES FOR SENSITIVE FEET AND DURING THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS. And buy them at home before coming to the parks. We bought ours at Wal-Mart for $4.97 - both parks were selling them for $20 - ouch! The pavements can get very hot and the bottoms of both the lazy rivers and wave pools are a bit rough. We found the pavements at Blizzard Beach to be extremely hot since there is so little shade.

AVOID THE WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS. Our visits were on a Tuesday and a Wednesday with Memorial Day weekend in between. While talking to a cast member on Wednesday he told us that over the three day weekend the parks were jam-packed and the waits for the slides were extremely long. Since both parks are so well designed the locals tend to flood them on weekends, so maximize your visit by taking the water parks in on a weekday.

CONSIDER A RE-FILLABLE MUG. Or bring your own resort mug. Refillable TL or BB mugs can be purchased for $10 and are refilled with soft drinks and lemonade on the day of purchase. For $5 you can purchase a sticker to put on your BB, TL or resort mug and have the same re-fills. It worked great for us -we drank more than $15 worth of lemonade on both days!

RELAX. Lines for slides and attractions can build up quickly, but if you plan on spending an entire day at the park you will get on everything and still have time to enjoy the Disney theming. By the mid-afternoon of each day we were ready to sit in our lounge chairs and just soak up everything around us, giving us enough energy to ride a few more slides before we left for the day. With all of the sun exposure and walking you will be pooped at the end of the day, so don't plan for any late nights at Pleasure Island afterwards. Use the water parks as a day off to have fun and spend some quality time with family and friends.

Can’t decide whether to attend the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue or not? Well, Walt Disney World’s longest running show is very much worth your hard-earned vacation dollars. I just attended my 20-something show in May and it still holds its original charm and entertainment value.

Getting to Fort Wilderness is half the fun. We took a bus from the Ticket & Transportation Center. It made one stop at the Wilderness Lodge, and we arrived at the Pioneer Hall/Settlement Trading Post stop in only about 10 minutes. You can also drive directly to the Fort Wilderness main parking lot and take a bus to Pioneer Hall from there. I recommend allowing at least one hour for travel time. If you arrive early, it’s always fun to check out the Settlement Trading Post or stop in at Crockett’s Tavern for a before-dinner drink.

After checking in with a host or hostess, you get your picture taken. They’ll take note of your pre-assigned table number and deliver the pictures to your table later during the show. Cost is $20 for a souvenir paper-framed 5 X 7 and two plastic magnet pictures. We bought ours - it turned out really great and it’s a nice memento of the evening.

Once the doors open, you’re seated very quickly. There’s fresh bread and salad on your table and your server will come around and take your drink order. It’s all-you-can-drink soda, milk, coffee, tea, beer, and sangria. You’ll hear an announcement that The Pioneer Hall players have just arrived on the stagecoach to entertain you while you enjoy bottomless buckets of home style fried chicken, barbecued ribs, baked beans, and corn. The Players arrive (three girls and three guys) and do their opening number, and then the servers bring out the chicken, ribs, beans and corn.

After a short break, Smilin’ Jack on banjo and Miss Kitty on piano entertain while you eat. Then the Players come back out for the main show. Listen for American folk song favorites (My Darlin’ Clementine, Beautiful Dreamer, ending with the Grand Finale the Ballad of Davy Crockett) - it’s good old-fashioned corny fun with terrific singing and dancing. There’s some audience participation along the way too - joining in just makes it more fun! Before the Grand Finale, the servers make an appearance on stage with your dessert - fresh strawberry shortcake. Be sure to holler loudly for your server!

All in all, it’s a wonderful evening of top-notch Disney entertainment. Shows are nightly at 5:00pm, 7:15pm and 9:30pm. Cost is $47.80 per adult and $24.81 for children (age 3 to 11). You can receive a 10% discount by purchasing your tickets with American Express. TIP: WDW accepts reservations up to two years in advance (you must be able to secure with a credit card). Tips for DisneyQuest:

- Visit during the morning or during a weekday. The building's attendance sky-rockets after 5:00pm and lines can be quite short during the day.

-Avoid visiting while it is raining outside.

-You can save time waiting in line for Cyberspace Mountain by selecting a pre-made roller coaster. If you pick one made by Disney it will likely be more balanced and entertaining.

-Treasures of the Incas is a fun attraction often overlooked by DisneyQuest visitors. Drive a remote control car underneath the floor in search for a treasure. Have your friends shout directions for you or use the video camera installed on the top of the car. Either way, this is one fun attraction!

-Remember that Ride the Comix is located on two levels - check both levels for a shorter line.

This month will be short and sweet because my kids bedroom door just fell off and is laying on the hall floor at the moment... some days owning a home has it’s draw backs, today is one of those days.. oh well, it’s nothing I can’t fix with my super duper chainsaw. ;)

So, news is that the Diet Club has lost a member.. lovewalt has dropped out for the next 8 months to have a baby!! Congrats Holly! You guys really should have told her about the water sooner... Special Congratulations to all of you that have stuck with the Diet Club and for your pounds lost. Way to go guys! If anyone would like to join the Diet Club hop into the most recent post here here.

Also the Collapse-aholic meetings were well attended last month... sad, but it’s really addicting, so far it’s the only really good distraction from Intercot. We had a few Birthdays to celebrate in May.. youdamen, Moochpuppy, JimmyC, llMaJikll, DisneyHog, lesliemomma, Vito, RainbowBright5486, disguy, and Jillpie all had virtual cakes to share... Of course there were posting milestones, they went out to Roland, BrerGnat, Katmegali,and Narcossee’s Fan with 1000 posts, citizensnoopy with 2000, Dawn with 3000, TiggerRPH, Dizneyana & Beast_fanatic all with 6000!!

Hmmm... Did you leave for a vacation and leave your home alone? Not a good idea with this months decorating crew on the loose...painting by Lizzy is not exactly pretty when rabbits and balloons are involved... don’t know what I’m talking about? Then head over to the games forum and take a peek at what they’ve been up to.

The biggest Woo Hoo this month went out to WDWacky with the addition to his new family.. baby Taylor joined him and his wife Trish on May 25th. Congratulations to both of you! Ok, back to the real topic...

Even though summer doesn’t officially get under way until later this month, summer activities at WDW are in full swing! Park hours have been extended to summer lengths and last minute cancellations not withstanding, E-ride nights for resort guests are still on the schedule throughout June. You can find the schedule of June E-ride nights here

Disney has kicked off the summertime fun with the reopening of Epcot’s Journey Into Imagination with Figment! That’s right, the lovable dragon is back and ready to spark your imagination. Also back is the original attraction song, “One Little Spark”.

Shockwave powers its way into Epcot beginning June 16th at the American Gardens Theater. This high-energy show is similar to its predecessor, Blast!, but is said to be even more thrilling! Check the Epcot daily entertainment schedule for performance times. There is no additional admission charge for this show.

While at Epcot, be sure to catch a glimpse of the Segway Human Transporter at Innoventions. This transportation device is said to be the future of personal transport. You can find more information about this display here

The Orlando Rays’ (the double-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays) third season at Disney’s Wide World of Sports is now in session. Games run throughout the summer. You can find a complete schedule here

Many other sporting events are also scheduled to take place in June at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex. These include the National Jump Rope championship from 6/21-6/23, and the US transplant games featuring athletes who have received organ transplants from 6/25-6/29 and the first session of the 2002 AAU Baseball International Championship from 6/24 - 6/29.

With Lilo & Stitch opening in theaters on June 21st, you can expect to see related characters and activities in the parks. One option to escape June’s afternoon heat is to head to Downtown Disney to catch this new film! What better place to see it than the town where it was actually animated?

And, of course, the 100 Years of Magic Celebration continues at all 4 parks!

Sounds like June is busting out all over - all over the World that is!

A reminder for guests planning to attend the holiday events at Disney World; Book early! Tickets for both Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party went on sale in April. These events sell out quickly. Date details can be found on INTERCOT's Events Page

A couple of notes of interest for Dining Planners; As of June 9, 2002, all priority seating arrangements for Cinderella's Royal Table Character Breakfast will require a credit card deposit of $10 per adult and $5 per child at the time of the booking. Once the PS is made, no changes can be made to the name on the original booking.

The Magic Kingdom's Crystal Palace is going down for building maintenance, beginning July 29th. The tentative reopen date is December 15th. During the down time guests can visit Pooh and the Gang at Tony's Town Square Tavern for breakfast and lunch. Tony's will have it's "normal" non-character meal offerings for the dinner crowd.

For those of you who know me well, you know I have a couple odd idiosyncrasies. First off: I am an amazingly picky eater (odd therefore that I would be the food critic here.) Second: I am a total cheapskate! I mean cheap cheap. So today I am happy to bring you a review that manages to satisfy both my odd tendencies, great simple, hometown food and a great price (well a great price for Walt Disney World.)

The Trail’s End Buffet is located on the property of Fort Wilderness Campground, very near Settlement Hall and the Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue. This is just a quick boat ride from the Magic Kingdom, the Contemporary, or the Wilderness Lodge. You can also drive over or take a bus. A quaint building nestled between the large pine trees and surrounded by our furry friends the rabbits and squirrels, you can relax before or after your meal on the rocking chairs out front.

On my most recent visit, I decided to give it a try for breakfast and was again pleased with the offerings. The buffet was plentiful with fresh fruit, cereal, oatmeal and grits. There were eggs 3 ways, bacon, sausage, potatoes, pancakes, breakfast pizza, Mickey Waffles and some fantastic cinnamon French toast. (With either syrup or hot fruit for toppings.) For the southern food fans, there were huge biscuits with two types of gravy to smother them with. They also make all of their own pastries, and donuts daily. Huge chocolate covered donuts and cinnamon buns as big as your child’s head were just some of the day’s choices. The price of the buffet includes hot tea or coffee, juice or soda is extra. Breakfast will run you $8.50 for Adults
and $5.50 for kids 3-11, as always, under 3 years old is free. For two adults to get a full buffet breakfast in WDW for under $20 is a rarity these days, which is why this has quickly become my favorite breakfast spot.

The deals don’t stop at breakfast though. Lunch here is offered noon-2:30 and includes a large salad bar and fresh fruit, sandwiches, and 2 soup choices (usually one is chili.) Hot pizza is brought out every few minutes as well. Other hot choices include their famous fried chicken (same that is served at the Hoop-Dee-Doo), mac and cheese, and usually 2 or 3 veggies each day. Hot fruit cobblers, homemade cakes, cookies and other desserts tempt you before you head back to the park. I highly recommend a lunch break at Trail’s End on a hot busy Magic Kingdom day. Take a break and a short boat ride over for an hour of cool air and great food at a reasonable price. Lunch Buffet is $8.99 for adults and $5.99 for kids. (Lunch price does not include a beverage.)

Dinner is served 4:30 til 10pm and is another great buffet for the whole family. It includes the same salad, soup and fresh fruit bar, along with peel and eat shrimp. Hot choices usually include fried chicken, ribs, a carved item like ham or roast beef. There are always plenty of side items like mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cornbread and biscuits. Dinner is a great deal at $14.99 for adults and $6.99 for kids. Trail’s End has a full bar for your enjoyment, and having a cool drink on the front porch before dinner is always a great way to start the meal.

Priority seating for Trail’s End can be made, but I have never needed one. You may find the buses and boats a little busier right before and after Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue, but on a normal night you should be able to walk right in and sit down for your meal. I hope you all can give Trail’s End a try on your next trip, for a great meal at a great price!
