If you want American history there is always Niagara Falls, America side. I know some people don't feel that its worth going to but its a lot of time a day trip for us.(we live 2 1/2 hours away) During July on the weekends they have fireworks. Go to Lewiston and they have locks and a mine tour. We want to do that sometime. There is also an Artpark that direction, Old Fort Niagara. It not action packed but there is a lot of history there. There is an amusement park small but enough for a day. If you research it on line there is inexpensive and free stuff to do that we enjoy anyways. There is also a pass that you can get that will get you into the cave of winds, maid of the mist and they have a movie that i think its an IMAX type movie.
In short its just my suggestion. It isn't any hotter there than anywhere else in July.
Just got back. Unless we win the lottery or some long lost rich relative leaves me a bunch of money we won't be back for 5 years.
