Animal Kingdom Wait Time Skeptic
I was at AK yesterday. We went up to the Na'vi River Journey and it was closed with a technical issue. Went over to Avatar Flight of Passage and the displayed wait time at the entrance (and the app) was 180 minutes (had been growing all day). We got in line anyway and the actual wait was only about 90 minutes (right before we got on the app said 85 minutes). After supper we went to the now open Na'vi River Journey right before close and the posted wait time was 70 minutes. About 20-30 minutes later we were on the ride.
I know they are adjusted based on the badges sometimes given out in the lines and expect a 10-20 minute variance but the actual wait times was half of what was posted. Does Disney post unusually high times in some popular rides at times to encourage visitors to visit other attractions and come back to the marquee ones? Or does the wait system (at least at AK) need to be fine tuned?

In a word, yes... Disney is known to over stating the wait times... They do so, in part, to spread crowds and discourage people from waiting... So if they say Flight of Passage is 180 minutes, the idea is people won't wait and then go to one of the attractions that are a walk on...
Does it work?? Not all the time...
Son of Jor-El.. Kneel before Zod...
TRICIA JONES: I heard that you were going to propose to Brandi Svenning at some theme park. When are men going to learn that women want ROMANCE, not Mr. Toad's Wild Ride...
BRODIE: Hey, now, be fair. EVERYONE wants Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

A combination of that and artificial Guest Satisfaction. A Guest will be much happier to wait 60 minutes when then sign said 90 minutes than the reverse.
