Spash Mountain
I have always thought it interesting that a ride should be so popular, based on a movie that (comparatively speaking) nobody has seen.
Maybe this is where the Frozen ride should have gone.

Frozen would not fit in that area. Frontierland would have to have a theme change for that.
More people have seen "Song Of The South" than you may imagine, and when the ride was installed, it was not that old of a movie. Also, there wasn't so much fuss about how things were "seen" versus what was originally intended.

Yeah, I forgot about the theming...
I understand what you're saying about the movie. I'm just saying that at some point nobody will have seen it since it's out of circulation. But then again... who remembers the NY. Worlds Fair of 65? and "It's A Small World"?
... I do...

I love Splash Mountain! While most children may not be familiar with the movie they are familiar with the music that they hear during the ride. "Song of the South" is currently available on DVD and Bluray

You're saying the music, or the movie are available on DVD?? I'm 99% certain the movie has never been released on DVD, let alone Bluray. And according to Disney execs, never will be.
As for the attraction, it has been and will hopefully remain one of the great classic attractions at WDW.

The movie is available outside of the US, and Disney World has a lot of people come from all over the world.
I'll meet you at the Rainbow Bridge.
-
It is not available because of it’s controversial racist tones and portrayals. I have a bootleg dvd from many years ago. You can prob get imported versions on amazon or eBay just make sure it’s region free
Too many trips to keep track of now! Vacation WDW twice a year so any questions ask freely ☺️

That and you can download it all over the place.

To be honest I think a lot of casual guests don't actually link it with the movie. On my first visit in 1998 (I was 8) I was vaguely aware there was a movie called Song of the South but I didn't realise Splash Mountain was based on it, I just enjoyed it as a ride in its own right just like Space and Thunder Mountains, Pirates of the Caribbean (before the movies), Haunted Mansion, etc.

I think this is very true, and will be more so with the passage of time.
The ride is very story driven. That being said, fewer and fewer will know what the story is. That's my point...

Why does every attraction have to be linked to a recent film? Splash Mountain has existed on it's own merit for for almost 27 years at Disney World, almost 30 years at Disneyland. Even if people don't know the back story, it's a popular flume ride. I never even saw Song of the South and I still like the ride.

Ha...don't kid yourself! One wrong move and it could be rethemed in under a year. It is great that MK (and WDW, plus DL and TDL) have a great flume ride. However, you don't need to any further than the whole Kate Smith controversy that erupted over the course of the last week. One outcry and Splash Mountain could be closed for up to a year in under 24 hours. I'm not looking to start any dissent here because we are on Intercot and we should keep it positive. However, we are supposed to learn from our past and our mistakes. How are we ever going to get better if we keep erasing everything that offends someone?

They don't need to know the story before they ride, it tells the story itself. I still haven't seen Song of the South but the story told in Splash Mountain doesn't get lost on me, it doesn't rely on any prior knowledge.
To me, whether you have seen Song of the South or not, this is an excellent ride in its own right. I wouldn't want to see Disney risk ruining by retheming it to whichever movie is the latest fad.

I'm surprised they didn't change it after Dixie Landings was renamed.

I agree that the ride tells the story. My son has never seen Song of the South but this is his favorite ride in WDW. The music is catchy and the story (as told by the ride) is fun.

The thing about it is that the whole ride is more about the 'Uncle Remus' stories by Joel Chandler Harris than the "Song of the South" movie. Growing up, I was reading the 'Uncle Remus' stories in grade school (a parochial school at that!) Knew nothing about the movie, but knew B'rer Rabbit, B'rer Bear and B'rer Fox, as well as the other characters.

What do you consider old? The ride opened 43 years after the movie was released.

Star Wars came out 42 years ago. By the time the next Avatar movie comes out, the first will be 40 years old
