Adding the Dining Plan to an Existing Reservation
I'm hoping that someone can answer this question for me. We are annual passholders and have scheduled an upcoming trip to coincide with a conference being held at one of the resorts. Because of the conference, we were able to get a fantastic group rate on the onsite room. When I spoke with the agent in charge of group reservations, she told me that I couldn't add the dining plan because they were linked to the price of the room. I told her that I was willing to pay the full daily price of the plan, but she said that it couldn't be done. (Usually I don't purchase the plan, but we will be there during a busy time of year, and don't want to leave property.) Has anyone done this before? If so, how would I go about adding it?

You will not be able to add it unless the group worked it out with Disney. Since it is a special rate and a guarantee that you will be with other people in the conference, you will not be able to change it unless you purchase your own room during the stay.

This. You are getting the fantastic rate because it has been negotiated with the conference. The conference organizers would have to have the plan add on. Your TA would have to check through them and may already have.

Most group rates are without the dining plan as the system doesn't normally allow it. In replacement they give out dining cards instead. It's been in the works for years to see how to do it, but it hasn't been done to date.

Well that's kind of a bummer, because I was willing to pay full price for it. At nearly $75 per day, I know that it usually isn't cost efficient to get it for all 5 "adults" (picky DD10 and DS12), but wanted to do it for convenience. You'd think Disney would want to lock people in and try to keep them on property with the dining plan. (Especially of they are paying full price for it.) We may be headed back to some of our regular Orlando area favorites instead in order to avoid the seasonal upcharges.

I thought that was it but didn't know for sure. Thanks for confirming.

IS it convenient, though? I find it a nuisance to keep track of how many credits I have, etc. As you say, with two kids that you would be paying full price for, it isn't much of a cost saving. With direct to room charging, I feel like that is much more convenient. We've done it both ways - and for the sheer "ease of use" it was the out of pocket, use the room key to charge, and the kids also had charging privileges.
