There's Just No Pleasing Some People
Check out the reaction to mom's "surprise" announcement.
Never had that problem with my kids or grandkids.

I couldn't imagine! My ds7 would be thrilled beyond belief if I surprised him with a trip to WDW!
-
I bet we won't be seeing that in a Disney commercial!

I saw this a couple of years ago. Actually there was an original write up with it that explained the kids thought they were seeing an uncle (or relative they were close to) that they loved and hadn't seen in a long time. They all missed him etc. So the mom told them that is who they were driving to see.
Then when she told them Disney...they were upset that they weren't going to see the relative. It would have been more exciting for them if she had the relative meet them in Disney! ugh. I felt so bad watching this a long time ago and it still gets me upset.

We did something similar one year. We told the kids we were going to Niagara Falls. On the way we got "lost" and ended up driving to Disney. My oldest was pretty upset that he didn't get to see the Falls. He made us take him there shortly after we got back.

I saw this a couple of weeks ago. It's getting a lot of air time online...
I thought it was one of the funniest videos I've seen in a long time...for many reasons.

So, I guess that the Dick they were referring to was that relative, huh? If so, it kind of makes sense in a way, although I can't think of very many relatives that I would rather see than go to Disney World.
Plus, the kids look really tired after driving all night long. I have a feeling maybe the mom didn't handle the whole situation in the best way.

They wanted to see Uncle Dick.
It was the parents fault for giving them something to look forward to, and then taking it away.
As a previous poster said, Dick should have met them at WDW, or they should have stopped at Dick's on the way.

I have a daughter that would react similarly. Not all kids are into Disney.

It's all in the set-up. Tell them they're going to do something they're not that interested in and I'd bet the reaction is a lot different.

My kids probably would have reacted similarly. They love wdw, but adore their grandparents, aunts and uncles. I agree I don't think mom set it up the best way. I wonder if they at least had a great tine once they got there.

I have a hunch that that is why they planned it the way they did and videotaped it--because they hoped to get into one of those Let the Memories Begin commercials. Guess it backfired!

Ed,
I soooo agree!! There is just NO pleasing some people!!! My husband's sister's family for example... we spent a week with them in Orlando. They invited us, we DID NOT invite ourselves. I am a Disney person...it was hard to be in Orlando for a full week and not get over to the parks, and then a cast member I knew was off a day and he got some of us in. We invited all of them (as we would have paid the difference), and only Fred's nephews joined us. His niece (age 9) told us it was too much walking for her. You can't make this stuff up!!!

I feel sorry for the children, personally.
Surprising your kids is one thing. Lying to them, and getting them excited about one thing and then switching it up is completely different, and pretty rotten, IMO.
I honestly don't really get the obsession some parents have with "surprising" their kids with a trip somewhere at the very last minute. When I was a kid, that kind of thing would have really made me anxious. I am a planner, and I would have hated to be surprised last minute like that. I probably would have cried too, as much as I love WDW. Kids have their own agendas, and most like structure and knowing what's going to happen ahead of time.
Even now, if my husband, for example, showed up and said "pack your bags, we are leaving tomorrow for a week", I would have a panic attack. I can't just up and leave like that. I'm not that kind of person...

The one that cracks me up is the video of the two little kids and the little girl was excited when they pull up to Disney but the little boy was sad. When his mom asked why, he replied "I wanted to go to Chuck E Cheese."
Two things You told me: That You are strong, and You love me.

I would have left the kids and gone myself haha.
