Steak
hey, i was talking w/a friend of mine who is also a disney geek and we were talking about the food, espcially the steaks at disney....both of us admitted we're spoiled by Disney. I just can't seem to find a steak that lives up to some of the ones we've enjoyed. has anyone else have felt that about the food in general at Disney? that once you come home anywhere you eat is kind of a let down?

Not at all actually. I can't really think of anything I had in Disney that I can't get at home that tastes just as good if not better then in Disney. The food is my least favorite part of vacationing at Disney so we are starting to find places in the surrounding area that we enjoy more.

My husband thinks the waffle dish hot fudge sundae at the ice cream shop in MK is the best. I tend to agree with his.

I've found a lot of steak equal to or better than what I've had at WDW. But I think that simply being in Disney makes everything more magical, so I'm not surprised that you would feel that way.

iI totally agree that just being in WDW makes things more enjoyable.
But I do not go to WDW for the food, most of which is highly overpriced and mediocre at best.Though their efforts may be laudable, the results leave much to be desired, especially when it comes to any type of ethnic food. If you want any ethnic cuisine, go to that ethnic neighborhood.

Right, there's a German restaurant near me that's 5 times better than Biergarten, but there's no om-pa band and I can't walk out afterwards and watch Illuminations.

Yak & Yeti
dinner at Yak & Yeti is my new favorite....

Been going to Disney for a long time and used to love the food. Last three times on DDP and I can honestly say food is not a big thing anymore. Next trip, 'downgrading' to counter service. Prefer not to waste money on food I can get at home much, much cheaper.

More or less. I partially agree with you.
---I do agree with you on the steak matter. Period.---
I think Disney is trying to sell you a whole experience rather than an outstanding dinner (or food for this matter). And they do it very well. They will sell you decent food in an extremely well done environment. The perfect example is the Biergarten in EPCOT. I just came back from a vacation trip to Germany and all I can say is how amazed I am with what Disney recreated. It is just like if you were in Germany. The food might be OK but the whole experience really makes you feel like if you were there. And the food is VERY similar to the one you eat in Germany, so they do a very well done job.
I think that most restaurants in Disney are not focused to the "foodie" clientele. They are focused to the mass market.
If you were Disney what would you choose to sell: quality or quantity? With so MANY millions of customers visiting your theme parks every year, the answer is evident.
That is the reason why some of the most popular restaurants have been a BIG letdown for us (Boma, 'Ohana, Coral Reef) and that is because, in my opinion, the food doesn't live up to the expectations. I am not mentioning the environment, which is GREAT, I am talking about the FOOD. It isn't that the food is bad, it is that is average. And average food we have it everywhere.
On the other hand AND in my VERY humble opinion, there are terrific restaurants in WDW. There are even nice surprises like Cat Cora's Kousina. Some restaurants that we have REALLY enjoyed: Citricos, California Grill, Hollywood Brown Derby, Kousina, Bistro de Paris, Artist Point, Flying Fish to name a few.
Last, but not least, there is hope. If you are willing to walk a little bit, there is a Shula's Steak House at the Dolphin Hotel. 10 or 15 minutes of nice walking from EPCOT. Or something closer, The Yachtsman 5-10 minutes from EPCOT.
Great Steaks!!

I tend to be in a better head space when I'm down in Disney, whereas if I go to Harry's Savoy Grill, I might have come from work...perhaps not the best way to enjoy that prime rib. (Did I mention I'm a grouch?)
Disney World is a more benevolent environment. I am in a better mood to receive and be aware of good things.
Are the restaurants better than those at home? Probably not, but the rarefied air of Disney makes the a good meal great.

My son is definitely spoiled by steaks at WDW - we always do the DDP, so he gets to eat a steak every day. Then when we get home, he STILL wants a steak every day and is bummed when he can't have one.
