NYC People....UPDATED
A question about the subway....
My husband was given a gift of a trip to NYC for 2 nights; airfare, hotel in midtown, and tickets to 2 Yankee games. I've found a site that details how to get to the stadium by subway, but my question is: is it safe? I figure we'll be leaving for the game around 4:30 both days and I'm sure we'd be fine, but what about at night getting back to the hotel? And, would you say we should act like we know what we're doing, cause I'm not so sure the two of us could pull that off .
Would it be better for us to take a cab, and if so, any idea how much that would cost?
Also, when we get back to midtown after the game is it safe to walk around? I see the Carnegie Deli is open 'til 4 am and we were thinking of checking it out, among other things.
I'd appreciate any advice you all can give!
Denise

You'll be fine.
When are you coming? I work a few blocks from the Stadium. PM me if you want.
I don't know what site you were using, but make sure if it's rush hour (4:30 qualifies), you can't take the D from midtown to the Stadium...it won't stop at 161. You can take the D (orange line express) from midtown (west side) up to 145 and change to the B (orange line local) and get off at 161/River Ave - Yankee Stadium. Or, if you're on the east side, catch the 4 (green line express) train and get off at 161/River Ave - Yankee Stadium. The 4 is the above ground one you see when they have Yankee Stadium on tv...the B/D are underground.
And yes, you can try to know what you are doing. It should be safe on your way there, and there will be a lot of people on the way out also. The trains are still well-populated until 10 or 11 at least. The trains are pretty long (10 cars for most numbered trains, 8 (bigger) cars for most lettered trains). If it's really crowded, try to get in one of the cars towards the end; if it's less crowded, chances are you will be safer towards the middle where more people are.
A cab from midtown to the Stadium could get quite expensive...I'd estimate around $30, especially if you get stuck in traffic. Not sure how easily you can find a yellow cab after the game.

Definitely take those directions! Coming back at night shouldn't be too bad just because there will be plenty of others who will be doing the exact same thing. It's not like you will be walking onto an empty scary subway platform at night.
Cab would be pricey - plus you'll enjoy riding the train with everyone else who is wearing all things Yankees.

I've taken the subway before, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. If you do wind up getting confused and half to take a cab (I've had to do that), it won't be so bad because cabs in NYC are fairly cheap and easy to come by!

The Carnegie Deli is very expensive but the sanwiches are huge. You'll easily be able to split one.
As for the subway, I've been to NYC 3x in the past few years and always found New Yorkers that were helpful getting me on the right train. The streo type is they are all rude so that was a very nice surpirse.

ditto. I suppose we looked lost too and people stopped during the morning rush to help us locate the right train. We purchased a week pass w/ unlimited rides. Taxi's can be $$ and time consuming if you are running all over town. Have a great time.

I'm so jealous!!!
My dh had to work in NYC for 3 months and I went to visit for a few days. I traveled by myself during the day all over the city only using subways and I actually felt safer in NYC than I did in my own downtown area. There were a couple of occasions when we were out really late to take in a show or shopping and we never really had any issues.
My dh did a couple of Yankee games and was staying in a hotel in Jersey City and would travel back and forth using the subway and he loved the vibe on the trains before and after the games.

What days are you coming? Is it on a weekend?
One thing I forgot to mention was that they frequently, no, ALWAYS, change some subway lines on the weekends for construction. If you let us know if it's on a weekend I can PM you with specifics.
Also, I want to clarify what I said earlier. The 4 is above ground in the Bronx, but below ground in Manhattan. It actually rises up right near the Stadium. The D runs express in Manhattan and in the Bronx at rush hour in the peak direction only. Otherwise, it's local in the Bronx (but still express in Manhattan) and the B doesn't go north of 145th Street.
So yeah...let us know if you are going weekdays or weekends.

The games we are going to are on Tues. July 29th and Wed. the 30th. (I'm writing down all your instructions!) We actually just realized last night that the game on the 30th is a day game! I'm happy about that because it'll give us the evening for Time Square!!
Thanks again to everyone for your advice and sharing your experiences.

That will be fun! I wish I was going!
Since it's weekdays, mostly at rush hour, there shouldn't be any major track changes. I think you'll do fine with the train!
Let us know about your trip after it's over.

Subway
Nini,
We live about 15 miles from you! I understand your question (LOL).
The only public transportation I had ever taken in 38 years, was DISNEY BUSSES!!
There are a million cops all over directing traffic etc. We usually stay in Tarrytown and take the train in, but last year, took the subway into Manhattan after a game. We had Grandma and Grandpa w/ us who have never been out of Bville--and just screamed TOURIST. We did just fine.
Just know where you are going and use common sense safety. GO YANKEES!!!

I would think you'd be sick of Yankee games! Or is it that type of thing where you never go to what's right up the road - kind of an "oh, we can do that any old time" thing?
I'll definitely let you know how we do!

Hehehe!!
Isn't it funny, we're so close but yet SO far!! Feels like we're going to be visiting a different country! If your Grandparents made it then I'm sure we can too! (B'ville, huh? I actually went to high school in Phoenix - it IS a small world after all!!)

Yeah, I rarely go to the games. They are expensive and I basically can go any time.
I have been watching them build the new stadium, since I ride past it daily. It's pretty cool, but I have almost no photos of it.

I just asked my sister (who lives in Weehawken and works in lower Manhattan) and she says they have 1 day all day ride passes for the NYC subway at a cost of $7.50. Go to mta.info for more information.

This is true. They are "unlimited use". The only stipulation is you can't use it twice at the same station within a 20 minute period...to prevent people from passing them off to everyone in the family. If you are going to enter the train or bus more than 4 times in a day, this One Day Fun Pass will save you money.
All the train stations have vending machines. They take debit/credit (all machines) and cash (big machines only).
