What's it like in late August?
Okay, two questions:
1.) How are the crowds?
2.) Is the heat really bad?
I know that we are deffinently going in August (315 days!!!) and I'm just curious as to what we're going to be experiancing.

We've been twice in late August, and although the heat is really, really crazy, it is still a great time to go.
We've become smart, and can manage the heat. We drink A LOT, take advantage of air-conditioning as much as possible (walk through stores instead of out on the street, see the longer shows in the afternoon), and head back to the resort for a swim and break before we're so wiped that we're not enjoying it anymore.
The crowds however are great, lines are fairly short, we've never really had to wait for much...and anything we did (like Soarin'), we just got a FastPass. We didn't need to do any evening EMH, and still didn't have to pass up on anything.
So, a little crazy with the heat, but we'd go again at that time of year in a second.

If you are not used to southern heat and humidity, you might look at another time of year. As someone born and raised in the south, I would rather go in early summer rather than later. While it is warm in June, it is nothing like Aug and early Sept. It is a trade off between heat and crowds, but do not underestimate how bad the heat and humidity can be.

The crowds are up and down-- overall, not that bad. The later you go, the lower the crowds. We were there from Aug 18-28. There were some busy days, especially weekends. Soarin always had big lines and you had to be early to get a Fastpass. Some mornings, everything was walk on. In general, lines were 20-30 minutes.
The heat was intense. It really slowed our pace and we did end up seeking air-conditioned attractions or just not doing some things because it was too hot-- and we're a family that loves the heat. We drank plenty of water (nothing else quite hydrates sufficiently) and kept a nice pace. Because we had a long stay, we were able to slow it down, take breaks, and still see and do everything we wanted. It would have been a hard time of year to do a short vacation and get it all done, but you can do lots if you take advantage of mornings and evenings and pace it right.

My last trip to the World was the last week of August of 2006. We had a few days of intense heat and humidity but overall found it to be a really good time to visit. The lines tended to be quite short with 10-20 minute waits for most things. Soarin' was the exception of course so we FP'ed that one.
Still, I would hesitate to say it's a good time for ALL families. You know your family best and what they can tolerate. When we went down in August, DS was 8 and seemed pretty immune to the heat. Not to mention the fact that I sat him and my-then husband down and said, "Okay. It's Florida. It's summer. It will be hot, it will be humid and it will rain at least once every single day."
Overall, I would say definitely consider late August. Have fun planning your trip.

Hot, hot, hot! I'd definitely take advantage of the squeeze breeze fans (although, I'd recommend buying them at your local Target store, rather than the overpriced ones at Disney). As always, there will be the usual 10 minute shower every afternoon to cool things down (very, very slightly... but cooler none-the-less) and you can always duck into an airconditioned gift shop for a break from the sun. The last time I went to the park in August was 4 years ago, so I might be a bit outdated, but from what I can recall, we did not have a problem with crowds at all. The lines moved rather quickly and we never waited more than 35 minutes.

August is extremely hot and humid. Be sure to take afternoon breaks. You will need them!

I totally agree. I have been living in FL since 1988 I still cannot get used to the extreme heat/humidity in August. (I was born and raised in PA so I prefer northern climate.)
Bottom line: It really all depends on whether you can brave the heat.

I'm an Oklahoma girl and used to 100 degree temps in August, but add in the Florida humidity and it's horrible. For me Disney is just not fun in the late summer. Too much is outdoors and I can't enjoy myself when it's miserably hot.

We visited in August of this year, the 26th to the 2nd of September, and for our home to be in Evansville IN, it was hotter in Evansville than it was in Orlando. Needless to say it was hot, but we planned our day around the extreme afternoon heat. We would go to the park in the mornings and in the evenings and took advantage of the EMH. We drove over to CoCoa Beach one day and had a blast at the beach and ocean. As far as crowd sizes, they were manageable.
