Requesting a Handicap Accessible room?
We have a 2 bedroom villa booked at OKW the week before Thanksgiving (not the week of Thanksgiving). I am bringing my mom on this trip. She cannot walk up stairs at all and she needs a walk in shower for bathing. I have requested a Handicap Accessible room on the first floor. I am slightly concerned we will not get what we have requested as this can and has happened in the past. We will be staying one night at POFQ before checking in for the week at OKW. I can get there as early as needed to start the check in process to make sure we get the right kind of room. Do you think this will be an issue? She really cannot walk up stairs at all and I know there are no elevators at OKW. I am a little concerned.
Any thoughts?
Julie

Call and speak with a reservation cast member. Tell them you must have a first floor for medical reasons. Explain that she cannot do steps. I don't do steps and we have never had a problem. We do always get to the resort of choice early, so there are still available options, in case a room that is not acceptable is assigned, however, first floor has never been a problem on many many trips!!! Do get it noted on your reservation that it is a must for medical reasons. Last year we had a handicap room on first floor, 4 doors from the food court at French Quarter. Have a good time!
Disney more times than I can remember.
Have stayed at Fort Wilderness, Fort Wilderness Cabins, Caribbean Beach, Dixie Landings, Port Orleans Riverside, Port Orleans French Quarter and Pop Century

Also, fyi, in case you have to switch. Coronado has elevators.

There actually are elevators in just a few of the buildings at OKW - I think they realized they made a mistake by not having them in the original buildings. When they redid a number of the buildings after they no longer needed the preview/sales area, they did put in a couple elevators. These buildings are located to the right when you go through the main entrance.
But I have to think that an Accessible room has to be one of the first things they look at when assigning rooms. That's significantly more important than other requests, so hopefully, your request is honored - both the first-floor (or elevator-accessible) and the walk-in shower/bath. I agree with those above - just make sure it is emphasized on your reservation. And getting there a little early in person to check in probably never hurts either.

Only buildings 62, 63 and 64 have elevators.

We've had the opposite experience at OKW-getting a HA villa when we didn't request one. Based on our experience, the CMs are extremely cooperative about getting you what you need. But I do agree that what's important beforehand is putting "for medical reasons" on your request for a first floor.
