    Default Question About Motion Sickness

Again - I preface with: this is our first cruise EVER! And where I'm VERY excited - I have a slight amount of anxiety about the dreaded - SEA SICKNESS!

Everyone in my family gets motion sickness - some more so than others. Different triggers, too. Some in the car, some from video games, some from medications/post surgical. So - I've put in a request for scopolamine patches from our docs.

In addition - my hubby got dramamine (non drowsy) and meclazine from the pharmacy at the suggestion of our doc.

Some people have suggested sea-bands. Not sure if that works or not - but hey, I'll try anything that's designed to optimize this very expensive cruise! LOL

I will of course look this up - but who here has used the scopolomine patch behind the ear? I read that it can get "somewhat" wet - just not for extended times. But I'm curious about rules regarding wearing them in the pools because if that stuff gets in someones eyes it can dilate their eyes.

So - fill me in! What is your experience with these patches and any experience from folks who get motion sickness on cruises!? I'm a big girl - I can take it! LOL

I've never tried the patches, but Bonine has worked great for me.

I get motion sick very easily, but Bonine has kept me fine even when hitting the "old sea".

My sister tried the patches, but found that they burned her skin. She said that felt like she was in a fog when she did wear it and felt dehydrated. Also, she was unable to imbibe in anyway. After a few days, she gave up on the patch and used dramamine. This was on an Alaskan Inside Passage voyage, which I find calm as a lake, but not her.

My wife and son both suffer with motion sickness but we hate using drugs unless totally necessary. They've found that Peppermint essential oil works really well and haven't had any issues on boats or cars since they started using it.

Chris, can you tell me how they take it when they use the peppermint oil? Do they mix with water and take orally or put the drops behind the ears? I've heard of both methods and wonder which works best for nausea. My wife suffers from occasional motion sickness, and finds Dramamine, etc ,makes her drowsy.

Generally they put it on the wrists (like with a roll-on) version or smell it straight out of the bottle. Just sniffing the oil in the bottle can make a huge difference. The issue with the behind the ears drops is peppermint is considered a "hot" oil and so people with skin sensitivity can sometimes feel an uncomfortable burning sensation. That's never happened with my family but it's something your wife should test at home. As for taking it orally, you have to be super careful about which brand you use. Young Living has a specific line that's safe for consumption, but not all peppermint oil is safe for that. It can really tear up your stomach. But the external application and smelling has worked great for us.
