A quick question from someone who is currently looking into purchasing some points...we have been doing some research and wanted to know if there are any perks/advantages to having points purchased for different vacation resorts?

Like I said, we are just looking into it now and most of this is confusing....we are reading and looking at the Timeshare site in comparison to the Disney Vacation Club site.

Maintenance fees vary from resort to resort and the resort you purchase at you can book it 11 months out, all the others at 7 months. Some rooms can be next to impossible to get without owning there like AKL consierge level and Boardwalk and Beach club during food & wine.

Agreed. If there is a resort that is your absolute favorite and you think you'll want to stay there most of the time, buy points there and make it your home resort so you can make reservations 11 months out. If you will look to stay at different DVC resorts based on availability - or if you're really not a long-term planner and like to make your arrangements less than 7 months in advance, then it won't really matter where you buy your points. Then you might go for the cheapest points with the cheapest dues.

One other potential difference that you might consider - when the points expire. For example, some OKW contracts expire in 2042, some are extended beyond that. The newer resorts (VGF and Poly) run well beyond that.... Good luck with your decision!

Is it correct to say that if you own a small number of points at different resorts, then you are allowed to book at the 11 month window no matter how many points you have there? For example....25 points at BCV, and 50 at AKL, and 100 at OKW, etc. you would then be able to book your stay at BCV at 11 months out or AKL at 11 months? It doesn't matter the amount?

So in that case, if it is correct, it makes sense to try and get some type of points at your favorite resort on the retail market so you can book at 11 months and get what you want instead of trying at 7 months?

If your not set on one property per se, buy on the retail market and get the resort with the lowest price per point and dues and then buy a small amount at one of your "prefer to stay" resorts....

    Is that how it works?

    No...

You can only use the home resort points at the home resort at 11 months.

Meaning, you own at AKL and Beach Club. You can only use AKL points at 11 months for stays at AKL. You have to wait for 7 months to use your Beach Club points at AKL. You can borrow AKL points if you want, but remember if you borrow points, they stay in the year they are borrowed to.

Do you have only one "home resort" if you purchase at multiple properties?

    Sorry...just

No, your home is wherever you own points. Several members have multiple home resorts.

Back in 2000 we started with 200 points at VWL, worked out way up to 585 by 2010 at VWL & OKW, and now are at 210 OKW points total. Our needs change over the years.

If you were trying to get BC, GF, or BW at 7 months (not your home resort) during a busy season, say March/April during Spring break, would it be hard to get a reservation?

That's correct. We own at SSR and have stayed at BLT, AKL and BWV so far other than SSR. So, if it's not a real busy time you can usually get into most resorts at 7 months.

I'm not sure what the confusion is, but it does seem to tie people up. Maybe it's the marketing materials. DVC planning has always even pretty cut and dry, the hard part for us isn't the when and where. We're always planning out two three years ahead so its working out the what ifs.

If we do one week here, we'll have this many points and can only do this the next year, OR if we stay here we can do all this.

    100 at VB -- resale
    110 at SSR -- resale
100 BWV -- direct because after watching for months there were no resale contracts available with our use year

Just dipped our toes in last Fall with 160 resale points at SSR. We figured it's enough to get us there every other year, but maybe want to buy another 50 or so more in case the family grows.

Being a newbie I know you should buy with the same use year, but buying same month on two resorts gives you two 7 month windows?

I think someone also told me booking with separate use years causes separate reservations? As an example let's say you wanted to stay somewhere for a week on 270 points, but you only had 200 points on an April use year and 100 points on an August use year that you'd actually have to make separate reservations to accommodate this?

There are definitely some complications if you have different use-year contracts - including having to make separate reservations in certain situations.

Technically, buying the same use-year on two resorts actually gives you two 11-month windows to make reservations based on your points for a particular resort. So any points you have for resort 1, you can use to reserve 11 months out at that resort. Any points you have for resort 2, you can use to reserve 11 months out there.

The 7-month window is open for any and all points you might have, for any DVC resort.

We bought 210 points at BLT direct from Disney back in 2009. That's enough for our needs right now.
