    Default Southwest Airlines and 2YO

This upcoming trip will be our first utilizing Southwest Airlines. I noticed there are only adult fares. There are none for children on the web site. Our youngest son will be 2 years old on this trip. Does anyone know if he needs a ticket? Or is he still allowed to sit on my wife's lap?

If he is 24 months or older you will need to buy a ticket for him to travel. This will be the same price as an adult ticket. I believe only international flights have children's fares.

And since he has his own ticket, he has his own seat. You'll be seated after the A section boards, if you haven't purchased earlybird seating and be part of the A group.

Southwest does have children's fares (also senior and military fares) but you have to call to book them. But be aware that children's fares will not necessarily be less expensive than a regular "adult" discount fare.

btharvey, when do you purchase the earlybird seating option? At time of ticket purchase? Or some time prior to departure date?

You can do either. You can purchase the early boarding when you purchase your tickets, or add it later.

BUT, the sooner you purchase it, the better (the lower boarding number you'll have), so it really makes the most sense to purchase it when you get your tickets.

If you buy a full fare, there may be a child discount. If you buy the lowest fare, that's the price.

Remember with a child you get everything associated with that ticket. two bags, carry on, etc.

Planes sell by seats, they don't sell by weight (that's a good idea) or height, etc. They only have so many seat, and if can go to an adult or a child. They still take up a seat.
