July 28, 1995 – The Disney film “Operation Dumbo Drop” was released.
July 28, 1997 – TIME magazine ran an article titled, “The Lion King A Different Breed of Cats.” The article focused on the Minneapolis production and the question of whether or not Broadway audiences in N.Y. were ready for Disney’s version of its classic animated film.
July 28, 1997 – The Disney Game Show “Win Ben Steins’s Money” began airing on Comedy Central.
July 28, 1998 – Disney’s 1st cruise ship, “The Magic,” was christened 2 days before its maiden voyage.
July 28, 1998 – Walt’s brother Roy O. Disney received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
July 28, 2002 – The life and contributions of the late animator Ward Kimball was celebrated at the Walt Disney Barn Museum. (Kimball was one of the founders of the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society, which operates Walt’s Barn in Griffith Park, Ca.
July 28, 2003 – Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin (of the famous Apollo 11 crew) took the controls aboard Mission: Space at Epcot during the filming of an ABC TV segment that features the new attraction. (The segment would be shown Aug. 15, 2003, on ABC-TV during the network’s airing of the feature film “Mission to Mars.”)
July 28, 2004 – Character actor Sam Edwards passed away in Colorado. His Disney voice credits include Thumper in “Bambi,” and Ollie the Owl in the “America Sings” attraction. He also appeared in the live-action 1975 film “Escape to Witch Mountain.” Edwards performed the voice of Tigger (a role most commonly associated with Paul Winchell) for various projects as well.
July 28, 2005 – Disney’s musical “The Lion King” began performances at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne, Australia. (It would run through June 2006.)
July 28, 2005 – “Lucky,” the nine-foot-tall, 450-pound Audio Animatronic dinosaur that has benn making its home at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in DinoLand at WDW, would make his final appearance.
