What identification is needed for children by the airline? We will be flying American Airlines in June and my son is 11 and does not have a photo ID. What is needed?
We just flew JetBlue with a 6, 11, and two 14 year olds, and we were not asked for any identification for any of them. At the security checkpoint when they reviewed each ticket they would ask who each person was. They did ask my 14 year old how old he was, he is a big kid. I don't think any ID is required until they turn 16.
The TSA requires identification for all individuals over the age of 18. Unless needed to confirm eligibility for a certain class of seat, you're unlikely to need identification for your 11 year old.

We've never had to show any ID for our boys (now ages 11 and 13). We started travelling with them at ages 3 and 4. We do have passports and pocket sized birth certificates- but have never been asked for them while travelling domestically. Usually the TSA will ask them thier names and where we are going when we get to security checkpoint but that is it.

We made xerox copies of the kids birth certificates.
My kids were under 16, but looked a little older. They were asked for some sort of identifcation and then asked their name and age.
I would take a copy of their birth certificate just in case security is tight when you go so you don't encounter any problems. Even though most airports don't ask for any ID for under 18....they did ask my kids.

My son is 8 and we have never been asked for ID but our state has the enhanced licenses/ID's that are also sort of like limited passports that can be used for closed end cruises and travel into Canada so we got one for him. It makes it easy when we cruise so we do not need to bring original birth certs and the ID has an embedded chip with certain info on it. I always present the ID at security even though they don't ask for it.
Most states offer non driving IDs that children can get. Its good to have but not necessary

For domestic travel you need nothing, unless over 18. Even before 9/11 rules went into effect we never asked for anything. The only time I ever saw/heard an agent question is when a baby/toddler looked over 2 and no seat was purchased by a tkt counter agent or gate agent. I never in my years on the counter or gates questioned a minor child with his/her parents traveling as a family. Honestly I really wouldn't worry about it!
