Default $ of pressed penny book??

I am not sure if this is the right category to post this question in so if it's not I apoligize! Does anyone know the price of a pressed penny book? I think that's what they're called, the books you can hold pennies in? And what designs they come in?? I am looking forward to starting a pressed penny collection in Disney World!

The prices differed based on which one you got the one we got (tinker bell) was 8.95 most seemed to be close to that price.

    Thumbs up Addicting

Get ready for a possible addiction. It's great fun. We always take a roll of new pennies down even though most CMs (cashiers) will give you the newest ones they have. Have a great vaca and let us know how your collection is going.

I read somewhere on this board befor that someone was only using pre 1983 pennies and then some people say only new pennies is there a difference?

We use pre 1982 pennies, and they seem to streak less than newer pennies. We shine them up with a soak in vinegar and a scrub with a toothbrush, and they turn out very nice. As another poster said, it is quite addicting! We got our list of the machines, and carry it with us, checking them off as we go. We've almost got all the park pennies, but still have a ways to go with the resort machines. Have fun!

Pre-1982 pennies are made mostly of copper, while post 1982 pennies are zinc with a thin copper coating. In 1982 the Mint made both types.
Try to avoid the temptation of using new pennies, Zinc pennies can leave black and green streaks in the pressed coin. They will also turn colors over time.
If you have a coin shop in your area, you can buy uncirculated rolls for some pre-1982 dates for a couple bucks.

PS: If you're a fanatic, make sure the image is pressed on the "tails" side so the date shows on the final pressed coin.

I think all the books are $8.95. This trip we saw several different kinds. We got Tink and Mickey books. At first they were hard for us to find. Look near the registers. We filled a book last trip and another this trip. I wish we had purchased several books now. It is addicting and I think they change some of the coins between each trip. We also ran into a lot of machines out of order.

How do you make sure it's on the tails side?

Trial and error at first. All similar machines the coin will go in the same way. You always have a 50-50 chance.

Thanks! I'll have to see if I can figure it out next time. I think most of ours have the picture pressed into the heads side.

    I know the trick!

If you want to print on the TAILS side (so that the year of the penny remains on the heads side):
    - For machines that allow you to just press a button, make sure the tails side of the penny is facing RIGHT.
    - For machines that you have to turn the handle, the tails side of your penny should be facing LEFT.

We prefer to print on the heads side of the coin because sometimes printing on the tails side leaves traces of the original print of the coin.

I guess I never noticed the pressed coin machines.
We try to find something different for DD to collect each trip, this sounds like something she would like.

So, are these machines the same as the typical coin presses? Put in 2 quarters and a penny? Or do they cost more than 50 cents?
Does everyone just bring a couple rolls of quarters and a roll of pennies?

    Thanks for the info

Yes, it is two quarters and a penny. Try to take new or shiny pennies and they come out better. There are also quarter machines but we don't do those. They are too expensive. We have done this the last two trips and I filled up a book each time. I figured the first trip that it took about $30 in quarters to get what I got before I ran out. Not sure how many rolls of pennies I went through but had pennies left over. I save my change all year for this. I took at least that much this time and ran out. You can go to Intercot Central and print out a list of where the machines are. They have series of different pennies. Some are at the resorts. But most shops and buildings have one. Even the Firestation Main Street MK has one and most people don't go in there. Some are well hidden and you have to look for them. It is like a scavenger hunt sometimes and that is what makes it fun. Have fun!

I also love the idea of getting a new roll of pennies to do this with. We save up our coins for trips and I usually just go through what we have to pick out the ones that are most shiny. Getting a roll of pennies would be a lot less work and give us a lot more pennies. Same for the roll of quarters. We usually get at least a couple pressed quarters on each trip. Between that and the penny machines we sometimes quickly run out of quarters.

I know someone else left a link where to get the list. But if you froget...go to any Member Services and they will be able to give you a list.

I do have a cool story with the pennies...we were staying off property and on a penny hunt to complete a collection. The machine that was supposed to be at Contemporary was gone...so we asked at the front desk where it was...they said they didn't know but would give me a call when they found out. ( I was thinking...yeah right). Anyway the next day we got phone call that the machine was being refurbished. I love it when they provide good customer service.
