Can you just go camping with tents only?

And if so, how do you secure you belongings during the time you are away?

Yes you can use a tent at the fort. Secure all valuables in your locked car as you would any other campground. Don't leave food out the wildlife will get it too.

You will have a great time, just avoid the heat of the summer. I know they have rented stuff like cots, but I am not sure of the price. I would call FW to make sure they still do, and for how much

I would strongly suggest you go"practice" camping a couple of times near home as a tryout to make sure you know what all you will need and if you really like it. You need to be prepared to be able to keep yourself and your gear dry in a heavy rain, in the middle of the night. That's no small feat in a tent, especially if it's your first time camping. It's no fun trying to sleep in a wet sleeping bag.

As far as security for your things, there are not any roving bands of thieves wandering around in FW. Just don't leave any personal ID/credit cards/cash at your campsite, and all the rest of your gear will be just fine.

There are places around disney that rents popups and will bring them in and set them up I beleive. Do a google search you will find something. I dont know anything about tent rentals.

if that aint the truth, hahaha. we always bring a mesh dining canopy to set up over the table and we left ziploc bags of cereal in there, zipped it up and left, thinking it wouldnt be bothered, the chipmunks ate through the bags. we have always camped in bear country so we felt really relaxed here, knowing we didnt have to worry much, but the pavillion is nice to have, i encourage you to bring one, there is rain in fl, quite often, and it was nice to park the stroller in, leave our shoes and jackets on the table, and anything else we didnt want cluttering the tent at night, and it provided us a dry way to eat all the time.

I didn't mean to discourage you. You should still try out camping to see if you like it. Our family (DW, me & 2 boys) tent camped for many years and we always had a great time, even when it was pouring rain. My DW wasn't too keen on sleeping on the floor of a tent, so we got cots, and now we have moved on to a pop-up camper with beds (it is a lot more comfortable, and drier).

But camping in Florida, where rain is common, is not something you should do for the first time unless you know you are really prepared. The best way to be prepared is to try it out and figure out what gear you need and don't need to handle bad weather, meals, comfort, etc.

There are many guide books and a lot of info available on the web to help you figure out what gear you might need.

we use airbeds and we always spray our tent with water repellent. the nylon tents need it and they dont tell you this when you buy it but you have to spray the seams or you will get wet. We always bring an extension cord with a fan and a light, all of our amenities we use at home, alone with a carpet rug. Then we are all pretty comfortable in the tent.

I believe Disney does rent out a canvas tent, looks like the older style, kind of like a house. If you aren't in it much during the day and only use it for sleeping, you should be ok. The heat of the day can get you though. My daughter and BF will be staying in a tent behind our camper but they will have the opportunity to cool off in the camper though. We also put the tent up under a 12 foot By 20 foot screenhouse to give it shade and keep more rain off.
