    Unhappy Wheelchair ???? help!!!!

We are due to take a vacation at WDW in 6 weeks time

Since our last visit my wife’s health has taken a turn for the worse, resulting in mobility problems

Because of this she is going to have to have a wheelchair to make things easier for us to complete our three week stay.

Does anyone know if we can buy a wheelchair locally?

There are companies that will rent you a wheelchair for the length of your stay. I understand that they will deliver the wheelchair to your resort for you. You may want to go over to the Guests with Disabilities forum to get specific recommendations.

I'm sorry you have this added complication to your vacation, and hope you have a great time nonetheless!

Did you mean to say, "where can I buy one"?, or do you want to rent one? There are many places in the Orlando area that deliver and pick up. If you're staying at a Disney resort, some of them will "lend" you one for your entire stay. (Call your resort about that).

Gareth, you might consider using Google to check out prices for wheelchairs in the Orlando area as it may be more cost-effective than renting one for your length of stay.

If you do decide to rent one, make sure to arrange with the airline to have escort service for your DW at the Orlando airport and a wheelchair will be at the gate upon your arrival. The airport is quite large and it can be a very long trek from your gate to luggage carousels and/or the DME counter if you are using that service.

I have heard that you can get the "Disney's Guidebook for Guests with Disabilities" book at the Guest Services desk. Does anyone know if these are available online for download?

You might also want to consider renting an ECV. It might be easier for all of you if you did. With it she will have more independence.

I've used Walker Mobility in the past, and they are awesome. The only time the chair broke down, they had someone there in an hour who fixed it...

Have you considered bringing one from home? I bring my ECV every year, and they put it in with baggage, and it's waiting when you get there. As of last year, it wasn't any extra money, but that's easily checked.

This way, you'd have full use of the WC for your trip, and it would be yours for future use.

Smile Scooter rental in Disney area

I googled MOBILITY SCOOTER RENTAL ORLANDO FL and came up first with Best Price Mobility. They did a Fantastic job on getting me a scooter for my trip to the Parks. I'll use them again!

We have the same issue with my mom. She has a lot of health problems. In the past we've always rented a wheelchair from the parks but that can be a hassle. We've had them "disappear" while we were on rides and sometimes had no availability when we park hopped. Of course, we were staying outside the world so we didn't have the resort option to look into. This trip we are going to go with one of the local companies and rent an electric chair. Mom hates to feel like an inconvenience (even though we assure her she isn't) and this will give her more freedom too. The parks and transportation are great about handling people in wheelchairs. Sometimes we have had to use a different entrance or something but all the CMs we've met have been very polite and helpful. Plus Mom isn't having to search for a bench every 5 minutes. Have a great trip!

What are the pros and cons of bringing your own chair vs. renting onsite?

We are flying to and from and will have a rental car (van). We could use the airport chairs and then have one delivered to the resort. Or, we could use our own chair that we are renting here locally and check it with the airline (which they say they will do).

Has anyone ever checked a wheelchair with an airline?

We have in the past rented a chair at the parks, but my mom complained that the seat was not soft enough-she has no meat on her bones! We ended up putting her on a scooter, and she liked that a lot better. We had great luck with Bpmobility.com the last time we were there.
