Snacks in Carry-on
Hi! I just went on TSA's website and it didn't mention snacks as prohibitted items for carryons, but I want to hear what you all say. Can I take snacks (granola bars, peanut butter crackers (packaged), fruit snacks, etc.) through security screening. I would prefer to pack them in carry-on and not in our checked luggage. Is this okay?
Thanks!
Jen

We've never had a problem. I am fairly certain that the only prohibited items are those that are liquid in nature (and over 1oz). So you could bring granola bars and the like just not an apple juice box.

I leave tomorrow for POR!!! I am packing granola bars and lollipops in the carryon for on the plane. I packed the rest of the snacks in a small plastic tote that fits in the suitcase so I can pack breakable stuff in it on the way back. I am also positive that the only things that are prohibited are liquids.

You can pack snacks but not any drinks.

you can take pretty much any kind of snack (the lady at sw told me I could pack my kids a sandwhich ect if I wanted to) The only thing is the liquids - you can buy stuff in the airport after you pass through security and take that with you, you just can't bring anything through security
I believe that the exception to that is unopened juice boxes, but I would double check on that. It seems to get conflicting information. To be safe we didn't chance it and just bought them something in the airport to take on the plane.

Reread the TSA website before you fly! (It does change). Currently, you can take any food item (without worrying about the size) as long as it is not a liquid or gel. If it is a liquid or gel, it must be in a container that holds no more than 3 OZ and it must be put into a 1 quart ziplock style bag. Each person who has bought a ticket is allowed to fill their 1 qt bag (it must be able to zip close) (if your toddler had to buy a ticket, they can have a bag).
So juice is OK if it's in a 3 oz or less container and is in your zipbag. Applesauce & jello are OK if they are in a 3 oz or less container and in that bag. A large jar of jelly is not OK. A sandwich with jelly smeared on it is OK. A jar of peanut butter is iffy (it depends on who screens you and how strict they are- whether it's a solid or a gel.) It's OK on a sandwich.
The last time I flew (June 2008), an unopened juice box larger than 3 oz will be taken from you, and you may find yourself getting a much more thorough search since you tried to take contraband through a federal facility.
Baby formula has different rules (see the website) as do prescription medicines. Also watch out for hand creams, toothpastes, hair gels, sunblocks, etc. If they're liquids, creams or gels, they must be in a container that would normally hold 3 oz or less and be in your ziplock bag.
The above rules are to get you through security. Once you are in the secured area, you can buy anything sold there and take it on the plane. (no size restrictions, etc)
If your kids drink water, you can take empty bottles through security and then fill them at the water fountain in the secured area to use as you wait and to take on the plane.

1) Why take your own snacks.
2) Just wait for the stewardess to come by and give you snacks and drinks?
3) Usually they are filling enough.
4) Wait a minute!
5) I forgot, they aren't doing that anymore.
6) Sorry, just a Senior Moment with a flashback to the 60's.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I actually think Jetblue still has a snack. The snacks I'm referring to packing are for our stay, so there are a lot of them. I think we'll be okay.

Be careful . . . liquids and gels are not OK. So, Jello, pudding and the like won't pass. Also if you are taking packaged fruit that is packed in liquid, that's a no go too.

When we flew from Vegas in Oct I tried to take home the sample jelly that we got at the Grand Canyon Hotel (it had a really cool label) and it was under 3 oz and they pulled that baby out of my carry on and threw it in the trash. Jelly, ketup, jello and pudding were no no's 9 months ago.

Was it in your zip top quart size bag, or just loose in your carry-on?

If you go to the TSA website for traveling with kids, you'll see that juice over the 3 oz limit, is allowable.
When we went in January, both my boys were carrying 12 oz sippy cups of apple juice and we went through security with no problem.

Yes but they didn't care. They looked at me like I was a freak for saving the sample jelly

I flew via USAir in June with an almost 3 year old. I took a carry on of an insulated lunch bag that included yogurt tubes and Danimals drinkable yogurts, as well as Uncrustables PB&J sandwiches. Now the Danimals are technically 4 ounces in size, but they look very small so we had no problems. My son also had a 12 ounce sippy cup with juice, and all of my items were permitted because I was traveling with a child.
I shipped other snack items to my hotel, such as applesauce cups, granola bars, trail mix, etc. Worked out great!
