How the mother-in-law ruined our trip

I am so sorry that this happened! I think a family trip to WDW is in order, to make some good memories on top of the bad ones.

It is amazing how some people are never happy, no matter what you do or where you are.

I feel your pain..listen to what my MIL done..of course i will not be able to list it all..it would be 6 pages long !!..
1st mistake..they are DVC members..so she furnished all the rooms..including mine and my family..5 people in my family = for a 2brm villa at OKW..and a one bedroom for me and my wife..Of course they had the 3 bdrm grand villa for her, my FIL and and Brother in law..
2cd mistake..She had duplicate keys to all our rooms..(we didn't know)...she removed the keys to the safe in our rooms before we arrived so we could not lock anything up..after we all arrived and went to the parks..she went into our rooms...snooped around..didn't like what she seen in the rooms..so she began to complain...we wondered how she knew....well my mother stayed behind one day..and guess who walked into the room...what a shock !!..of course she said she was just going to leave some things she had bought for the kids..
3rd..since she was upset at things..instead of asking questions..she started changing our reservations..and yes even cancelling them !!..
When my brother confronted her about coming into the room..she called security and had my family kicked out of HER room..of course security said she couldn't do that..all she could do was ask them to leave...of course they did..and so did we...it ruined that trip for sure..she done alot more but i won't get into that...but let me say what my wife and i did...you will love this...
1st..We left Disney and went to Vero Beach for 4 days..then back to Disney and they were gone by then..finished out 3 more days at Disney, and then back home..The following months after that i bought our own DVC membership and took my entire family back for a wonderful, uneventful trip of the lifetime @!!
When MIL found out she even called DVC and tried to tell them how terrible people we were..of course they blew her off..We have been back many times since...of course without my wonderful in laws !!

Yeah the "All You Can Eat Buffets" - she really had the feed bag on. Just watching her stuff her face made me ill.

I can agree at how frustrated you are about it. Unless she paid for the entire trip for everyone, you and your DH needed to step to the plate.
I am sorry you had such a bad trip.

Actually, she did pay for everything. And my husband is intimidated by her - so much for him stepping up.

We took 2 friends (husband & wife) with us last summer, on our dime...we had our DVC villa, paid for their tickets and their dining plan...and they (especially he) were just grumpy and gripy the entire time about something. And indecisive. We'd ask what they wanted to do and then get a "whatever, we don't know what there is do to" answer back.

I'm now in agreement with SBETigg...DH and I honeymooned there too (although I'd been many times before then that was his first trip) and it is a special place to us. I think from now on it's just going to be us and the kids!

You need a do-over. A make-up trip to put all the negativity of the trip behind you. Imagine just you and your husband and the kiddies. It would make for a much more magical time without a little voice in the back taking away half or all of the magic from your trip. Hope you guys can overcome!!

My advice is the same as many others' here . . . Go Back ASAP! Take just your immediate family and have a super fun time! Have the happy memories foremost in your mind.

I have a girlfriend who loved to moan about Disneyland and how it was not the happiest place on earth. Well, she always went with her sister who was the type that if one ride was closed would be down at City Hall demanding her money back. If she wore high heels to the park, it was Disneyland's fault that her feet hurt at the end of the day. And so on. I finally got tired of hearing all of these Disneyland-is-so-crummy stories that I finally said, "You are wrong. Come with me one day and I'll show you".

She took me up on the offer and now her stories are along the line of "I used to think Disneyland was nothing special until I went with Linda" and proceeds to tell about all the fun we had.

Moral -- go back, grab some great memories, bury those lousy MIL memories.

You definitely need to go back and cleanse your Disney Palette. Don't let her ruin a place for you and your family that previously made you happy.

I went to WDW one time with members of my family, nothing bad happened but, never again!!

WDW is for the kids, DH and I only!

Hmm. Maybe we can just plan on a few activities together....

I don't know about that. I would think if you get along with them well (and like their attitudes) at home, they'll be fine at Disney.

We went this past spring break with DH's dad and his fiance. It was a BLAST! They are always upbeat, happy folks, and they had the same attitudes in Disney.

In fact, I got a TON of enjoyment watching my DFIL literally RUNNING from one attraction to another, and loved seeing him come off a rollercoaster clapping and hollering!

That's terrible!! Definitely take a trip with just your kids and get that magic back! My IL's don't understand Disney either, I always tell them they never will (I grew up near it, but still love it!). Some people will complain no matter what. Too bad you couldn't conveniently lose her on Splash Mtn!
