Food is basic burgers, etc. Atmosphere is fun.
We like the lunch selections better than dinner, and the atmosphere is lots of fun.
We went for the first time in December. I had avoided it because of what I heard about the food too.
Food was fine. The adults had burgers, fries and onion ring. Burgers were standard but I thought the onion rings and milk shakes were quite good.
We loved the atmosphere. It had a real drive in feel. My son had a blast being the "driver". Clips were appropriately cheesy. We also had a great waitress.
There are actual very few places in enjoying eating in DHS. Sci Fi is a place we plan to go again.
Food is fine - atmosphere is better. We go because it has cheesy B Sci-Fi movies in cheesy drive-in theater style seating (cars). Younger children are actually issued "driver's licenses". It is a MUST DO for my family. And I have ADRs for my trip with my 17 yr DD (HS Grad. celebration) in June.
We dined there for the first time last month. DDs 9 and 7 really liked the atmosphere and said they would enjoy going back again. They sat in front of the "car," which meant DH and I had the back and had a chance to enjoy some one-on-one conversation. Our server was fun--played along with the theme, but not over-the-top.
I wouldn't call our food "subpar"-- it wasn't really great, but not bad. We were not that hungry, so DH and I had sandwiches, which were fine. DDs ordered kids meals, and we all had dessert, which was yummy.
Based on what we ordered and our Tables in Wonderland discount, we didn't pay that much more than we would have at a counter service restaurant. But the experience was definitely way more fun than quick service would have been.
I ate at Sci-Fi about 18 years ago on a trip with my mom, my friend and her mom. The food and service were terrible and for years and years and years I pretty much downright refused to eat there again.
Well, fast forward to about a year ago and my 12 yo son kept asking what that place was every time we passed it. Finally one day just he and I were in DHS and needing some lunch. Pulled up the handy WDW mobile site on my phone, and there was actually an availability and I snagged it. Well lo and behold it was fun....and yummy. And I've been back since then with my husband. I'm sad I avoided it all those years.
Now maybe I'll give Chef Mickey's another chance. Uh....yeah, maybe not. ;)
So don't deny your kiddo. I think you will all enjoy it. If anything, the food may be subpar (although we enjoyed), but the atmosphere and experience is worth it.
If you are expecting to eat a good steak or excellent fish dish, then this is not your place. However; if you are looking for a decent burger or sandwich and a fun atmosphere, then this place can't be beat. It is one of the best themed restuarants on property. My family eats here just about every time we do Disney.
I would recommend lunch over dinner. Prices are less expensive. If on the dining plan, I would consider paying out of pocket as it is not much more expensive than a counter service meal.
Lots of fun, but food is not greatest. Everyone says the burgers are good though.
The "subpar" stigma has been there for a very long time, but I've never understood it. I've never had a "subpar" meal there (unless you want to declare all WDW meals as "subpar")
As has been mentioned, it's basic burgers, sandwiches, fries and shakes. It's a great place to have a late lunch on a hot summer day: air conditioned and dark. We've been known to drop by w/o ADRs and have never had to wait very long.
The dinner menu has more than burgers, and is good, but the sandwiches on the lunch menu (which you can get at dinner but aren't on the menu) are better.
IMHO, the Reuben and the Turkey Sandwiches are the best things on the menu. Burgers are typical counter service. Fries are good and the milk shakes are great.
Enjoy
Steve
out of my last four Disney trip i have been to the Sci-Fi 4 times (one on each trip).
I really enjoyed that Double Burger. actually my DW and I both split it because we were having a late lunch.
In the past the food was so-so but this past December the quality seemed better.
we both enjoyed it!
We've gone a few times, the atmosphere is the only reason for going, I have never had a good meal there though.
We went for the 1st time on our last trip and really enjoyed our dinner. The kids loved the atmosphere (we did too) and our food was really good.
I'm sorry we waited so long to try it!
:mickey:
Sci-fi gets a bad rap. The food is ok and the drive-in theme is really fun. We went there for our DS2s 4th b-day. He requested it when we went back for my 40th and again when we went for DWs 40th/DS1s 14th. It is a very special place for our family. Hope you find the same. Enjoy!
I would suggest eating a lunch or late lunch to possibly save a few bucks. The atmosphere is definitely well worth it. And I agree with others the food is basic "pub" food for lack of a better term but still found it yummy. But I found the atmosphere to definitely be worth the cost to eat there. The basic burgers, fries, etc is most of the menu so keep that in mind. But I am pretty sure your kid will love it and I am sure you will too. It's definitely worth the try if you haven't done it.
Doesn't the Sci-fi have the same menu and prices now for lunch and dinner? Either way, it is a very fun restaurant and the food has always been better than average! You should give it a try!
We went there for the first time in September '11. I got the steak and LOVED it. We definitely plan on returning. One of my kids got the burger. I tried it and it was also yummy! Another got the chicken sandwich, which I did not try but he said it was OK. This restaurant will be one of the first I book for our trip later this year. :mickey:
I love the Sci-Fi!!! It's not "gourmet", but the food is delicious!! The oreo milkshakes are amazing, I usually get them for dessert. My favorite is the cheeseburger and fries, but the rest of my family likes the ribs (they were made with Coca-Cola...I'm not sure if they still are?) I also love the atmosphere...it really feels like you are at an old-fashioned drive-in! We go in August usually so the AC is blasting, and it really feels like you are there on a cool summer night watching bad sci-fi movies...now I really want to go back!!
Have fun with your trip!
We went to Sci-Fi on 12/12, and this was the only meal we were disappointed with on the whole trip. We both ordered the steak and it was not good at all....VERY thin and lots of gristle & fat. Neither of us could finish them. But, we should have known better....we really considered ordering hamburgers and regret not following our instincts.
All that being said, we really do love Sci Fi...just stick with the appetizers & sandwiches and you should be fine. I know that's what we'll do the next time we go. :mickey:
We always eat there. My boys love eating in the "car." I did not think the food was that bad. It's pretty much like most of the "American" food on property. I had a pretty good sandwich once and a nice burger on another visit.
Don't waste your money on the higher end dishes in some sort of attempt to make the most of the money you spent on the dining plan! Just stick with the sandwiches.
When we went I had a rueben that wasn't anything to freak out over but the theming made it one of my fav places to eat. I'm a huge scifi b-movie fan, my favorite shows are Twilight Zone and Mystery Science Theatre 3000. So to me the cheesy trailers made it a great experience but if your going for food I'd suggest Pizza Planet and NOT ABC Comisary lol
I enjoy it for lunch. Burgers, soups, salads, sandwiches have all been good here for us. It's a fun atmosphere.
The Sci Fi is a lovely cool haven from the heat!!! I usually get the very very good Turkey sandwich on multigrain with avacado mayo. It is a fabulous sandwich ... and with some Iced Tea and those wonderfully horrible movies ... the Sci Fi is always a great stop for us!!
Not a fan. We have eaten there twice and I would agree with the "sub-par" description. I just feel like there are too many better places to spend my dining dollar/credit. (but I go for food over atmosphere...now if we are going for atmosphere, it is absolutely unique and cool)
For a better burger/sandwich place (in my opinion) I would choose Beaches N Cream. It is a nice boat ride from the Studios to Beach Club Resort.
All that being said, I do recommend people try the places and make their own decision. I was pleasantly surprised by San Angel Inn in Epcot and that is a restaurant that also gets very mixed reviews.
After eating at Sci - Fi for every trip since it opened back in '89 I hate the new menu but love the atmosphere.
Sci-fi is a place that you should try just once
if you are looking for a gourmet meal this is not it - if you have ever been to Johnny Rockets you will know what to expect at Sci-fi
We make a light lunch out of the Sci Fi. We split a shake and sandwich with a soda. The food is ok but we like the A/C break and the cool atmosphere.
We've been a few times and its always fun. Burgers and fries are great...my boys love the milkshakes. Its not LeCellier, but I don't expect it to be.
Thanks, everyone - I'm excited now to book this for her! I promise I won't be disappointed if the food is only okay, LOL
So this will be our second time there and I booked it because nothing else is good on the property anymore and mamas is closed for refurb during our stay. We are eating at 6:50 the park closes at 7.. Is the steak really not any good or the pasta?? I hate wasting a TS meal for burgers. Just not worth the money . I want something more there as we will only have starring rolls for an early lunch. I hate fat.. do you think I could order the steak ask for it to be lean and well done?? I hope they can let you do that or I could get the pasta
I understand your concern. Here is how I think about DHS and dining. When I go there, not only do I think about dining options in the park, but also the resorts surrounding the park. For example, it is just a brief boat ride and you can easily get to the Beach and Yacht Club Resorts so there are other dining options.(Cape May Cafe, Beaches & Cream, Captain's Grill, Yachtsman's Steakhouse for signature dining) I am not sure but I think you can even get to the Boardwalk. So just like when I go to MK, I think about dining on the monorail loop, you have options that are easily accessible outside DHS.
I love it. I always get a rueben and a shake.
I go there every trip, I love it!
I get a milkshake and the penne pasta. I am a vegetarian, so I don't have shrimp in it, but it is a GREAT pasta dish! Nothing too fancy, but who wants fancy food with their 'Attack of the 50 Ft Woman'?
I've went a few times and vowed not to go again as it's just ok. This past trip we took my mom with us as a first timer and wanted her to see it. I actually liked my meal. We were on deluxe dining, so we got apps. I had the buffalo chick. potato skins...yummy. I had steak/potatoes which were ok. You can also get a milkshake on the dining plan. That was so thick and yummy. We ended up skipping dessert. If you've never been, I'd say to try it, then you will know.
here's my take.
This is one of my favorite places to snack. Mostly because of the setting and ambience. I love the feel, the look, and the fun. The food is just an extra. If you are going for a fun meal and not so much fine dining, you will have a great time.
I had the chili, onion rings, and a milkshake. If you read the menu, this is two appetizers and a shake. Still filling, still not getting crazy price wise, and not going cheap either. It was a fun experience and I would do it again. Keep the fun perspective in mind and you should do fine.
I don't think we'll be going back after our last visit. We had advance dining reservations and still had to wait about an hour to get seated. There were people who were seated after us and got their food before us. It wasn't worth the 2+ hours we spent there.
The atmosphere is awesome. The food is pretty good. I haven't been there since they switched the menu but lunch was always a good bet.
The vanilla coke was :tasty:
Sci-Fi has great onion rings and Milkshakes. The burgers, OK nothing fabulous but good. WE like going there for Lunch. Don't expect a gourmet fine dining experience. though. It doesn't pretend to be California Grill, or Artist Point. I don't know why some people expect fine food in a theme park restaurant. I know, I know, it's the prices.
But go in with the appropriate expectations and you'll have a great time there. We love visiting the Sci-fi Dine in. It's super cheesy-tacky fun!
