Riots in Anaheim??
We will be in Anaheim on August 5-7th. I just heard that there are riots there in Anaheim. Can anyone tell me if the riots are near Disneyland? Family members who are traveling with us are already trying to back out of doing Disneyland while we are in that area. We are staying at the Doubletree Anaheim Orange County which is about 4 miles south of Disneyland just off the Santa Ana freeway. Is there any danger around our hotel and/or Disneyland?

From the daily news reports here the action is north of the 405 freeway. It is about 12-14 blocks north near Anaheim and Center Streets. That is not near Disneyland.
We are going down on Friday, so I will get to see if there is anything going on. They showed Disneyland on the news last night and said there was no problems around the park.
Hopefully by the time of your trip, things will settle down.

My sister and Mom are down there right now. I called them to find out and they said that they heard about the riots on the news but haven't seen anything around the park at all.

How about tring to book at one of the on property resorts and cancle your reservation at the Doubletree?

If we we're by ourselves we would definitely book a Disney hotel. Not going to work this time though as we have relatives with us and they don't want to stay there.

There are other, non Disney hotels that are as close, if not closer than the Disney Hotels. Look on Harbor Blvd. I've stayed at the Tropicana and the del Sol (?) hotel. I've heard really good things about the Park Vue hotel, which are all right across the street from the enterence. I've also stayed at the Quality Inn (probably seven or eight years ago), which is a little longer of a walk but was also doable. The Howard Johnson is also close but doesn't have a breakfast. It does have a very nice pool. All of them are within walking distance of the park and would probably work for you.

Update on protests
I went yesterday and no problems. I got off the freeway and right into Mickey & Friends parking. Same on the way out... no problems.
Saw on the news today that there were about 30 protesters with signs at the entrance to Disneyland. Looked to be at the crosswalk on Harbor Blvd. Everything was peaceful, no arrests. There was also police presence there on horse patrol.
The reporter said that the protesters MAY be there on the weekends for the next couple of weeks. From the reports it is because Disney has a big presence in Anaheim. Don't know the whole story and don't want to post any mis-information.
From what I saw on the signs on TV were "Tragic Kingdom" and "Not the happiest place on earth"
My question is why bring Disney into this. They have nothing to do with the dispute between the police and the protesters. UGH

We'll also be there around the same time, and I'm hoping the protests die down. I read up on the whole background of the situation and unless I missed something I really don't see why they have to protest outside of Disneyland. I guess it's just to get the most attention possible.

The incident happened while we were there. I was sorry to hear about it but it never crossed my mind that they would drag DLR into it. Glad I wasn't there to see that because I probably would have ended up in jail myself! Don't get between me and Disney property!

Is the coast clear?:D Just checking in:mickey: Just one more month:thumbsup:

I haven't heard of any news reports on TV about any more protests. Seems to have gone away, at least for the time being.
We were there on 8/12 and saw or heard nothing from anyone in the parks. The only complaints were about our current heat wave.

Saw no signs of anything around the Convention Center or the Resort on Monday. No protestors, no heavy police presence. Appeared to be a usual day.

Thanks for the updates ladies! :mickey:

Just for the future, know that Disney pretty much owns Anaheim. They have a LOT of connections and pull with the Anaheim PD.
Neither Disney nor the Anaheim PD would ever let something like this come remotely close to the area around the parks. They have a lot of protocols in place to prevent any sort of intrusion into the "bubble", so to speak. So, you can rest assured that this kind of thing will never really affect those visiting the parks. There is a lot at stake and they are very vigilant about keeping the area both inside and immediately surrounding the parks free of dangerous situations.

Thanks everyone:thumbsup:
BG, The riots could've been right outside my hotel room and I'd still come. Nothing like seeing news first hand:secret::D

We were there on August 5-7 and all was clear while we were there. I will tell you that a couple of days before we got there protesters tried marching towards Disneyland and were pretty much shut down immediately. As another poster said Anaheim is extremely protective of Disneyland....and like another poster indicated....it would take an awful lot to keep me from going to Disneyland if I were that close too.
