Just wondering opinions on the value of trip insurance. I have never purchased trip insurance for any vacation but am strongly considering it for a 7-night cruise in November. Is the "norm" to purchase insurance or does it seem like just another expense for an already-expensive trip? Thanks!!
I only buy trip insurance for cruises since they have a very strict no refunds policy after final payment which is too far out to know for sure that nothing will come up. I don't use Disney's cruise insurance though. It is overpriced and coverage isn't great. We use Travel Guard. Cheaper and better coverage options. Ends ip costing about $30/person. Totally worth it for peace of mind. And, that also lets you cover airfare, and pre/post cruise hotel stays as well. The DCL insurance only covers the cruise itself.
Trip insurance for cruises is also a good idea since not all health insurance policies cover you out of the country. They can also cover medical evacuation. Check you own policies first, check what difference trip insurance policies actually cover, and remember to take into account how exotic or distant the locations are.
I have used third party insurance because the financial hit would just be too high for a cruise as compared to other types of vacations. You can find websites that allow you to compare options and read reviews. Some even have cancel for any reason options.
Two nights before we were to have cruised, my younger brother was hanging by a thread life/death after emergency surgery. We had to decide go-no go for the cruise. We chose no-go. Thank goodness we took the insurance, as we were covered. Would have lost all of it if not for the insurance. :mickey:
I think it's a good idea. Just peace of mind.
I think it's a good idea, too, and has served us well with not only cruises but other vacations that didn't give us a lot of wiggle room with cancellation.
There is a great insurance coverage comparison site out there - if you are interested in the site, please feel free to PM me. We have gotten much more comprehensive coverage (cancel for any reason, preexisting conditions allowed, etc.) by doing a little research and finding a 3rd party insurance that fits our needs.
You may want to move quickly if you are interested in "cancel for any reason" coverage (which is especially good if work can suddenly become an issue). Most "cancel for any reason" coverage requires that you book it within a certain number of days/weeks of your first vacation payment.
